By 1878, a community had coalesced around this early pioneer, and incorporation followed in 1888—a remarkably early date for such a modest settlement. Spangle served the surrounding wheat farms with the necessities of rural life: general store, mill, and even the county poor farm in the early 1900s. Though its population never exceeded three hundred souls at its zenith, Spangle has endured where many similar towns have vanished, maintaining its essential character as a tight-knit agricultural community.
